In other Unix systems, you will have to login as root.

    Turning off Firefox 3 Autocomplete

Autocomplete - where you are given a drop-down list of suggested words as soon as you start typing - must be the most annoyingly obtrusive feature of Firefox and Internet Explorer. Why oh why do software vendors almost always make it a DEFAULT feature?

In Firefox 3, autocomplete is a particular pain in the neck. Immediately you type a URL in the Address Bar, you get a list of a million and one so-called suggestions.

To turn this feature off, first enter about:config in the Address Bar.

Ignore the This might void your warranty! message by clicking the I'll be careful button. You also might want to uncheck the Show this warning next time box.

Look down the list you now see in the browser for the entry browser.urlbar.maxRichResults. Reduce its value from the default setting of 12 by right-clicking the line with the mouse. I have modified mine to zero!
