Photonic Metamaterials

Metamaterials do not occur naturally. They are purposely fabricated, with properties determined by their structure and not by their composition.

In the past, such materials have largely been of interest to microwave communications and radar.

But new metamaterials are now being constructed that show novel optical properties - such as negative refractive index. Many of these features will have important practical applications in nanoscience.
