Photonic Metamaterials
Metamaterials do not occur naturally.
They are purposely fabricated, with properties determined by their structure and not by their composition.
Such materials have largely been of interest to microwave communications and radar.
But now metamaterials are being constructed that show exciting optical properties, such as negative refractive index.
Many of these new features will have important applications in nanoscience.
